Application Model: Overview

The Xbox One app model is more complex than the Xbox 360 model. On Xbox 360, a title effectively takes over the console while it is running, and the console is essentially committed to running one application at a time. When a user wants to play a different game on the Xbox 360, the console must reboot into the new game’s executable.

In contrast, Xbox One is progressing beyond such single-tasking to a design where a user can move freely through various entertainment experiences. In exchange for some complexity in development, Xbox One offers a richer user experience than Xbox 360. The adoption of a more sophisticated app model also enables new opportunities for developers.
