Updating a Console

You can use Xbox One Manager to update the system software on a console and perform a factory reset on a console.

Note If you have opted into automatic console OS updates on your devkit using Xbox Device Portal or Dev Home, attempting to manually update using Xbox One Manager or by running XboxOneUpdate*.bat directly will fail. If you want to go back to manually updating the console OS, change the OS recovery update policy setting to I install OS recovery updates manually and then try again to run the manual OS update from Xbox One Manager.

• To update a console and optionally perform a factory reset
• To perform a factory reset without updating the console

To update a console and optionally perform a factory reset

1. In order to update a console, you must have downloaded and unpacked the compressed OS image available from the Xbox One Developer Portal. OS update images are usually named in the format “XboxOneUpdate_[version].zip”. You should download the compressed file and unpack it.
   
2. Run Xbox One Manager from the start menu shortcut created by XDK setup.
3. Select the console that you wish to update from the list on the left side of the windows.

   Note You can update multiple consoles at the same time by selecting a console group instead of a single console.

4. Click the Update button, or select Update Console OS… in the context menu for a console or console group.

5. Xbox One Manager prompts you for the location of the console OS update package. Browse to the location where you saved the unpacked update image, select the update option you want, either Update or Update and Factory Reset, and then click the Update button.
   

   Note If you select Update instead of selecting Update and Factory Reset, the Update option will still do a factory reset if the build you are installing is older than the one currently on your console.

6. Updating using Xbox One Manager invokes the update package that you’re used to using, so the update process behaves as you’re used to, as it downloads the update to the console, reboots the console, and shows the green progress bar as it updates the OS. When the update is complete, the console reboots and shows the Xbox shell.
   

   Note Updates done using Xbox One Manager also create log files in %temp% on the user’s PC. There is one log per update and the logs are named with the following format:

   XboxOneUpdate_<console IP or hostname>_<datetime>.txt

To perform a factory reset without updating the console

1. Run Xbox One Manager from the start menu shortcut created by XDK setup.
2. Select the console that you wish to reset from the list on the left side of the windows.

   Note You can reset multiple consoles at the same time by selecting a console group instead of a single console.

3. Select Factory Reset in the context menu for a console or console group.

Note This process is the equivalent of running xbcleanup.exe /F.
