XDP Content: Product Types

Important Xbox Developer Portal has been replaced, and publishing is now done through Partner Center. Please see Publish Windows apps and games, the Xbox Live Testing and Releasing documentation, and the Advanced Publishing Guide.

Xbox Developer Portal (XDP) supports configuration of the following types of products:

Bundle
A collection of products that are intended to be purchased together and/or distributed as part of a single, physical compilation disc. A bundle can contain a title and associated downloadable content (DLC); a bundle could also contain multiple titles with a specified order of installation and an experience that is launched by default.

For more information about creating bundles, see Bundles.

Cloud game
A game that is streamed from the cloud servers, rather than downloaded to the console. Like other types of games and apps, cloud games require an entitlement and have a catalog entry.

Game
An exclusive app or a shared app that is offered in the Games part of the Xbox Store. Game is the default type when you create a new product in XDP.

Game add-on consumable
Add-on that extends a game’s experience by providing consumable or expiring assets, such as virtual in-game currency or a special power that can be used only once.

Game add-on durable
Add-on that extends a game’s experience by providing assets that are not consumed and do not expire, such as map packs and additional campaigns.

Game demo
Version or portion of a full game that is licensed for free play by users and available in the Xbox Demos part of the Xbox Store. Game demos require title IDs, product IDs, and binary files that are different from the regular or full game.

Game demos cannot be directly converted into the regular or full game by using the same binary files. If you want customers to be able to convert your title to a full game from the same binary files, use the trial mode functionality of Xbox Live, which provides the ability to add timed or curated trials to a game binary using the same title and product IDs.

Hub app
A shared app that customers use primarily to access information about, and to launch, a family of exclusive apps.

Media application
A shared app that customers use primarily to play media content. Media apps are offered in the Apps part of the Xbox Store.

SmartGlass companion
An app that provides a companion experience on a second screen. Such apps are written in HTML and JavaScript, and they are hosted within the Xbox One SmartGlass app running on iOS, Android, Windows, and Windows Phone devices.

Companion experiences can communicate in real time, synchronously with the primary game or app running on the Xbox One console, and they can be used while away from the console. Examples of the types of content that SmartGlass companions can provide include hidden screens for card games, real-time maps and helpful information, game lore, and additional content related to the primary media.

SmartGlass native app
An app that provides augmenting experiences on a second screen for the primary game or app running on the Xbox One console. A SmartGlass native app is not hosted within the Xbox One SmartGlass app, but is instead a native app for the companion’s platform (iOS, Android, Windows, or Windows Phone), and may be distributed through the respective store. The app uses the Native SmartGlass SDK to authenticate with Xbox Live and to, optionally, connect directly with the associated game or app running on the console.

Even though SmartGlass native apps are submitted directly by the developer to the app store for the targeted device, developers also submit a description of the companion, and a link to its location in its app store, to Microsoft to increase discoverability of the native app.
