To set up the software environment for developing titles, complete the following procedures in the order that follows:
Note Before you install any software on your development computer, consider creating a system restore point.
If you have not done so already, you will need to install Visual Studio 2015 or Visual Studio 2017 on your development computer. See Visual Studio for additional information.
Note If you install a new edition of Visual Studio after installing the XDK, you need to uninstall and then re-install the XDK (repairing the XDK is not sufficient) in order for the XDK to integrate with the newly installed edition of Visual Studio.
Download the XDK and documentation to your development computer from the XGD at Xbox One XDK Software Downloads.
When you install the Xbox One XDK it includes installation of project templates for Visual Studio that are designed for development of games and applications for Xbox One. For more information about the templates, see Project Templates in Visual Studio for Xbox One Development .
If you are an advanced user, you may want to install the XDK from a command prompt or build script; for more information about this step, see Silent Installation of the XDK. You may also need to integrate specific files into your build system without installing the full XDK, which you can do by extracting the files as described in Manual Extraction of the XDK Payload.
Note If at any time you need to uninstall Visual Studio, uninstall the Xbox One XDK first.
If you have any setup issues, see Troubleshooting Common Issues in the Xbox One XDK.
