Automatic Recovery Update Settings
All newly-activated Xbox One dev kits automatically update their console operating system when a new version is released, which is similar to how retail consoles are updated. This topic contains information about automatic updates, including how to change the default settings and how automatic updates will affect your workflow.
Note Automatic updates are enabled by default for dev kits that were first activated on or after April 24, 2017. No changes were made to dev kits activated before this date.
The following update options are available:
- I install OS recovery updates manually: Automatic OS recovery updates are disabled.
- Auto-install latest production OS recovery: The OS recovery will be updated only when a new version is ready to release to the general population of retail consoles.
- Auto-install latest developer preview OS recovery: The OS recovery will be updated whenever a new version hits feature complete.
- Auto-install the latest Xbox One X preview: [Xbox One X dev kits only] The OS recovery will be updated whenever a new version for Xbox One X consoles hits feature complete.
Changing your dev kit update settings
To determine which update setting your dev kit is currently using, start Developer Home on the Console (Dev Home), click Settings in the menu, and find the OS recovery update settings pane.
You can change the value of the update setting in one of the following ways:
- From the OS recovery update settings pane in the Settings Page (Dev Home).
- From a browser using Xbox Device Portal (Windows Device Portal on Xbox). Connect to your dev kit, click Settings in the menu, and look for the System Update Settings section.
- From an unattended setup script (March 2017 recovery or later).
How automatic updates affect your workflow
A newly-released recovery build is listed as “Available”. Consoles will apply Available updates only when idle (no apps or ERAs in the foreground, and no activity).
Within about a week, a new build will become “Mandatory”. Consoles that are set to instant-on mode will most likely take Mandatory updates in the middle of the night without your involvement; however, you might be impacted if your console is active for most of the day.
If your dev kit is not running a Mandatory build, it will eventually be forced to update when it is connected and requests information from Xbox Live.
